Given the levels of pesticides that are used to produce the crops that go into our foods, and the number of chemicals that are incorporated into everyday objects, we think it’s really important to go organic whenever possible. And if we’re happy to embrace organic meat and veg, then surely it makes sense to approach our mattresses and bedding the same way? After all, we spend around a third of our lives sleeping. That’s why, whenever possible, we source our mattress materials from organic-certified suppliers.
A key ingredient in most of our mattresses, organic coconut coir is the hairy fibre, taken from the shell of a coconut, is used to give support and resilience to our mattresses. The coir we use is grown organically in Sri Lanka on farms that are certified by the Control Union as organic and environmentally responsible.
We’re especially proud of our organic lambswool, not least because it comes from sheep grazing the lush, green fields of the West Country, close to our purpose-built factory on the banks of the River Exe. All of it is sourced from Soil Association farms in Devon, Dorset and Cornwall. It’s also naturally fire retardant. We combine it with cotton in our mattress covers, which pass the relevant fire tests without needing treatment with any additional chemicals, which means they’re as natural as natural can be.
