Why is the organic hemp in our bed linen grown in China?

Our GOTS certified organic hemp bed linen is sourced from a supplier in Portugal with impressive sustainability credentials, including a workshop powered by the solar panels on its roof and a system to recycle the water they use in the production process.

While the bed linen is handcrafted in Portugal, the organic hemp itself is grown in China. We understand that manufacturing in China has historically been a cause for concern, and we are committed to ensuring that workers throughout our supply chain are paid fairly and treated well.

Which is why we looked far and wide when we decided to start sourcing organic hemp bed linen. It turns out, over a third of the hemp produced in the world comes from China and an overwhelming share of that is dedicated to textile production, a history of which goes back at least 5,000 years. This is because China was one of the earliest regions to cultivate and use hemp, contributing to an advanced and superior hemp manufacturing industry.

This means most of the hemp fabric used around the world today inevitably comes from China. By sourcing from a GOTS certified organic supplier we can be assured that our organic hemp bed linen is not only grown sustainably, but is produced in a way that guarantees the wellbeing of all workers.
