Natural Latex – Full of Spring and Support
While we, at Naturalmat, source most of the ingredients that go into our products close to our purpose-built factory in Devon, on the banks of river Exe, our natural latex, by necessity, travels a little further! It comes from the Pará rubber tree (Hevea brailiensis), which originated in South America but is now grown on a large scale in south-east Asia.
What is natural latex?
In its raw form, natural latex is a sticky, milky sap that’s drawn off from the tree in a process known as tapping. Incisions are made in the bark and the fluid is then collected as it drips off. This is an entirely sustainable process. In fact, if tapped correctly, a Pará rubber tree can be harvested for decades.
Why we love to use natural latex?
To produce the natural latex we use in our mattresses, the sap is filled with air bubbles, giving it the springiness that makes it so supportive. We love natural latex because its cushioned structure delivers a comfortable and restful night's sleep. One of the natural latex’s major benefits is how it supports pressure points like hips and shoulders, which can be aggravated by less dense mattresses.
Natural latex is also a winner because it’s durable, just like the trees from which it originates. On average, it lasts two years longer than its rivals, which is another great reason to choose a product which has a natural latex component.
Unlike synthetic mattresses, which are created using a whole cocktail of chemicals and other man-made ingredients, natural latex is 100% plant derived, which means it’s hypoallergenic. Given that you and your loved ones spend roughly one-third of your life in bed, it’s comforting to know you’re sleeping on natural materials.
The other great advantage of natural latex is that it is breathable. Filled with bubbles, it has what’s known as an open-cell structure, which allows air to freely circulate through it. For you, that means a comfortable night’s sleep on a product that won’t make you overheat.
Latex is a key ingredient in our Natural Fibre range. Combined with coir, organic lambswool, cashmere and mohair, these mattresses provide a slightly denser and more supportive feel than traditionally sprung mattresses – delivering a supremely comfortable and natural night’s sleep.
