Pioneering sustainability in the mattress industry since 1999
For us, sustainability isn't just a fashionable bandwagon to jump on, it’s been at the heart of Naturalmat since the very beginning. When we made our first mattress in 1999 we decided that we would only use 100% natural ingredients from sustainable and renewable sources that were biodegradable or recyclable. Since then we have continued to pioneer green and ethical standards in our business and in 2020 our efforts were recognised when we were awarded the Queen’s Award in Enterprise for Sustainable Development. Having recently decided to formalise our strategy, we want to give you an idea of what’s to come.
We have been passionate about sustainability from the beginning, but the last couple of years have been a massive wake-up call and recently our worst fears have been confirmed. The IPCC report published in August 2021 is damning – to avoid the most dangerous climate change and limit global warming to 1.5ºc enormous effort is required from every nation, industry & individual. Even if we do achieve this, the consequences of climate change will be life-altering for everyone, even for us here in Britain. We also feel that tackling the environmental crisis must go hand in hand with helping the people that live in it - a safer world is no good if it is an unjust one.
We’ve been puzzling over how what we’ve been doing from the start ties in with how to best tackle these issues in the future. The result of this head-scratching and number crunching is five social & environmental pillars that will underpin how we conduct business. Each pillar explains what we’re already doing, sets ambitious goals, and lays out how we hope to get there. We pin down how and where our resources can (and do) have the biggest impact and we hope to provide peace of mind for you, our mighty customer, that your money is contributing towards a healthier future for our planet.
With an exciting announcement like this, there is no time to lose. Although we’re still formalising everything, we are making strides under each pillar right now. A full Impact Report will be published shortly and we’ll keep you posted about our ongoing eco progress. For now, you can learn more about our pillars below.
