Our Sustainable Production
We believed that natural fibres were best, and we set out to make a mattress that contained just that – without any chemical additives whatsoever. We also wanted to make sure that our packaging was environmentally friendly. Since then we have continued to develop our range and improve our products, remaining true to our founding principles.
All our mattresses are made by hand in our purpose-built factory in Topsham, on the banks of the River Exe, Devon. Our factory produces its own electricity which powers it, because we truly believe in controlling the impact a business has on the environment and reducing it wherever possible.
We believe that people, not machines, make a superior, longer lasting product. Our team of craftspeople ensure every stitch, every fibre, every tufting button and every cover is painstakingly created, teased and checked. When a mattress leaves our factory, we are confident it will give years of long-lasting comfort.
Since 2009, we’ve been striving to find more sustainable ways of working, so we can look after our planet for future generations. Knowing we’re doing the right thing means we can all rest easy.
We never entertained a thought of using non-natural ingredients in our mattresses, as being true to nature and harnessing the healing powers of the natural ingredients is at the heart of everything we do at Naturalmat. We go local to home, where we source our organic lambswool and into faraway places, from where we bring out organic coconut coir…to always ensure that the quality of the natural fibres is used is the best we can deliver without any compromises. We are very proud to work with other sustainable businesses in helping them deliver their goals and objectives and assist us in achieving outs, by growing the best possible natural fibres that we use throughout our mattresses, beds and bedroom accessories.
Sourcing materials from local farmers allows us to champion South West businesses, supporting their growth and development as well, while cutting our emissions; everybody wins. All the filling materials used in our mattresses are processed on-site, of which the majority are locally sourced in the UK.
We’ve invested in a range of state-of-the-art processes and innovative ways of weaving our mattress covers, which now contain a blend of lambswool and natural cotton, making them 100% chemical free and natural fire retardant, complying with all health and fire safety regulations without being treated by nasty chemicals.
To further enhance the resistance of our mattresses to contract bed bugs, dust mites and moths, in the final processes of weaving our mattress covers are treated with a natural geraniol finish sealing natural oils to help repel bed bugs, dust mites and moths.
